Sales Agronomist
Job Location: Bellaire and Lebanon area, Kansas
 
Description
As an Agronomist with Midway Co-op, you will play a pivotal role in providing expert agronomic advice and tailored solutions to farmers. This position involves developing and maintaining strong customer relationships, offering informed recommendations on chemicals, seed, and fertilizer, and conducting agronomic sampling and analysis to enhance crop production. You will be responsible for promoting the Co-op’s products and services, staying current on industry trends, and ensuring safe handling of agricultural inputs.
In addition, you will collaborate with other departments, participate in plot tours and educational events, and assist customers in adopting sustainable and profitable farming practices. This role requires strong technical, organizational, and communication skills to manage diverse data, provide detailed reports, and meet seasonal demands. Traveling to farms and business meetings, as well as working in varying environmental conditions, is a key aspect of the role. Roles and Responsibilities
  • Client Relationship Management: Develop and pursue leads with new and potential customers; maintain and expand existing relationships to support business growth.
  • Agronomic Consultation: Provide informed recommendations on chemicals, seeds, fertilizers, and best practices; tailor whole-farm solutions on an individual, case-by-case basis.
  • Sampling and Analysis: Conduct agronomic sampling, reporting, and analysis; make recommendations to customers based on results to enhance crop yield and quality.
  • Data Management: Develop, organize, and maintain diverse sets of data at both aggregate and individual customer levels to inform decision-making and track progress.
  • Safety and Compliance: Advise on the proper handling of dangerous and potentially harmful substances; ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Educational Outreach: Provide briefings and demonstrations to the public at plot tours, exhibitions, and through newsletters; inform customers and the public of agronomic best practices and developments.
  • Research and Development: Stay updated with the latest developments in plant science; conduct field trials to test the effectiveness of new products and techniques; implement findings to improve agricultural practices.
  • Technical Support: Assist farmers with crop management plans, including planting schedules, pest control measures, and irrigation strategies to optimize productivity and sustainability.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Promote sustainable farming practices that enhance soil health, conserve water resources, and reduce environmental impact.
  • Regulatory Adherence: Ensure all agronomic activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations; maintain accurate records and documentation as required.
 
Basic Qualifications
  • Candidates should have at least two years of professional experience in agronomy, crop consulting, or agricultural sales, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A strong understanding of agronomic practices, including crop management, soil health, pest control, and nutrient management, is essential.
  • The ability to analyze and interpret agronomic sampling data and provide actionable recommendations is necessary.
  • Candidates must have knowledge of handling and applying chemicals, fertilizers, and other agricultural inputs safely and effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required for customer interactions, presentations, and reporting.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously, are crucial.
  • Physical capability to work in diverse outdoor environments, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing, and working in various weather conditions, is also required.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Soil Science, Agricultural Business, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in agriculture such as custom application of chemical, crop consulting, or direct farming experience.
  • Five or more years of professional experience in agronomy, crop consulting, or agricultural sales is desirable.
  • Experience with precision agriculture tools, technologies, and data-driven decision-making is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with cooperative operations and experience working in a cooperative or customer-oriented agricultural business setting is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of regional crop production practices and challenges specific to North Central Kansas or similar regions is advantageous.
  • Experience conducting agronomic field trials and interpreting research findings is beneficial.
